What Microsoft keeps, and for how long
Microsoft 365 has a recycle bin, not a backup.
Deleted email
Once someone empties their Deleted Items, the mail can be recovered for 14 days by default, and 30 days at most. After that it is gone.
Leavers
When a leaver’s account is removed, their OneDrive goes to the recycle bin and is deleted for good about three months later, along with any files the business still needed.
Mistakes and attacks
A file overwritten, a folder deleted by accident, or files encrypted by ransomware on a laptop all sync to the cloud like any other change.
